Heinz New Package Design

Heinz decided to update their ketchup package design.  The new "dip and squeeze" package is available nationwide and on March 4th, a chain restaurant, Chick-fil-A, mostly found down south is doing a promotion.  If you ask for the new package you get free fries between the hours of 2 and 4pm.  This is a great way to promote.  Great for Heinz and even better for the restaurant.  Here at Hofstra whenever there is any kind of promotional free food, the students here don't miss out.  Whether its on or off campus.  So I'm sure Chick-fil-A will see a great incline of sales.  According to core77.com this is an example of "humble product design."  Something that "millions of people are going to touch and use everyday".  I think its great.  Great idea and great design.  0nhdas01.jpg0nhdas02.jpg

links to weather video

 snow storm update http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNQ7UNFA-bI

Scenario

Sara wakes up early one morning so that she can be ready for work in the next 3 hours.  As she gets out of bed she checks her naviCruiser for any updates she might have received during the night.  She notices that the weather app tells her it is going to be a snowy day.  Sara then, texts her friend, Kessia, who is also traveling to the city, that the weather isn’t so good today.  After she showers and gets dressed, she checks her public transportation app to see if there are any delays on the trains and buses.  She notices there is a 10 minute delay so she leaves right away so that she can catch the earlier train and still arrive to work on time.  As Sara is rushing to her car, Kessia sends Sara a video script, telling her that there is no parking in the parking lot and to park in the lot down the street.  Sara finds parking and she rushes to catch the next train.  As Sara is on the train she turns on her naviCruiser iFind app to see who is riding the same train as her.  She notices that Kessia is on the same train as her. When the train arrives at her destination, Kessia and Sara meet up and walk to work together.  The storm seems to be clearing up and sends an alert to Sara’s naviCruiser.  The naviCruiser makes travel even in harsh weather a breeze.

20 Awesome Billboards

I was on stumble upon and I stopped on a blog about 20 awesome billboards that wil catch your attention.  I noticed that most of these billboards are pop-outs which is something most people aren't used to.  They are used to advertisings filling the side the road with cheap designs and bad concepts.  These billboards are creative and funny I posted my favorites below.

The Battle of the iPhones

Now that Verizon had the iPhone in their network I sense a little tension from AT&T.  Verizon has a commercial showing the launch of the new iPhone on their network.  They are telling consumers to buy the iPhone on the "better" network and "rule the air".

AT&T who seems a little upset that Verizon has the iPhone and that they might lose customers shot at Verizon with a commercial that shows that if you buy the iPhone on the AT&T network you can do voice and data at the same time, and Verizon can't.  I think this little battle between the network is fun to watch.  Ill see who gets the most customers in 6months to see who is the claimed champion.

The Valorised Designer by Nigel Whiteley

Nigel Whiteley writes about the valorized designer in his essay.  He starts off by saying Theory and practice are no longer opposites but they are unreal.  And design education has changed in a ad hoc way.  He goes on to describe some current and recent inadequate models of education such as the “formalised designer”, the “theorized designer”, “ the technologized designer”, and “the valorized designer”.  The formalised designer didn’t learn about design history in school, only art history.  The design education focused solely on the formal elements of design, the craft, and construction.  The theorised designer is the complete opposite.  Design education focuses on a broad spectrum of theory because “theory explains all particular discourses.”  The technologised designer values technology.  This practice believes that new technology offers a better resolution that it previous.  The theory dwells on “how to” rather than “why.”  The valorized designer is “a new model in design education for the millennium.”  The valorized designer is “independently-minded, creative, constructive, understanding, has flair sensitivity and has social conscience.”  With this model theory and practice will interpenetrate but the distinction will not collapse. Whitely wants to create a “new academy” where design students will receive a true education.  “Students will become critical and articulate responsible citizen-designers, they will promise an understanding of value systems and be able to justify his/her beliefs and commitments.” Design is ultimately a cultural discipline; values are professionally and intellectually relevant.

The Glass Kettle Teapot

I was on Core77.com and they posted a design by Norm Architects.  Its called the Glass Kettle Teapot.  It can be placed on top of the stovetop.  It has what they call a "tea egg" and is attached by a silicon string that is built into the cap of the kettle.  When you dont want the tea bag is the water any more you just simply pull it out.  The "tea egg" that is retractable secures the top of the kettle so it doesn't drip or spill.  I love this idea because I love tea and the tea bag could get annoying at times.  Their next design should be a mug or a    travel mug.  That would be great for me because I like tea but not a whole pot worth.Norm kettle C x2 4545129.jpgIMG_1996.JPG
