On March 15th PepsiCo announced their breakthrough technology of the worlds first petroleum-free plastic bottle. The production of the new bottle is piloted in 2012. PepsiCo will use raw materials such as switch grass, pine bark, and cork husks, and has identified methods to create a molecular structure that is identical to polyethylene terephthalate aka PET, which is used in plastic material now. It seems that PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are in the race to see who can create the most plant-based bottle. In 2009 Coca-Cola unveiled their 30% plant-based bottle.
PepsiCo and Coca-Cola aren't the only compies in this race. Heinz ketchup also announced that starting in June, the bottle will be available in the eco-freindly PlantBottle packaging, sporting the "Guess What My Bottle Is Made Of?" label.
These new changes in technology is reassuring, that even big companies are thinking about our environment and trying to make changes to help. I wonder what our future holds.
